Gas kit has been around for a very long time, and it's still the quickest way to heat, cut and braze in plenty of workshops. It's also the equipment where cutting corners hurts most.

Treat gas with respect and it's dependable. Get lazy and it bites.

Two kinds of gas work

Most people mean one of two things. Small-scale heating and soldering with a blow torch and a disposable cylinder, or full oxy-fuel cutting and welding with a torch, hoses, regulators and large cylinders. They share a name, but the kit and the risks differ.

Disposable gas cylinders and blow torches

For plumbing, paint stripping, heat shrinking, soldering and light brazing, a hand-held torch on a small cylinder is hard to beat. It's light, needs no trolley and you can pack it in a van.

Using them safely

Work in ventilated space, keep flammable material well back and never leave a lit torch unattended. Store cylinders upright and away from heat. Don't puncture or burn an empty cylinder. Simple habits, and people still skip them.

Oxy-fuel cutting: what you're buying into

A proper cutting outfit has a torch, a cutting attachment, hoses, regulators on each cylinder and protection against flashback. Our cutting kits bundle several of those pieces, which helps if you're starting from scratch.

Torches

Choose between a full-size cutting torch for heavy work and a lightweight torch for portable jobs where you'd rather not carry cylinders the size of a small person. There's also the type 5 gas torch for those who want a specific style of fitting.

Cutting nozzles

The nozzle decides how well the flame cuts, and nozzles wear out. A blocked or damaged tip gives a ragged, slow cut with slag stuck to the underside. Buy the right cutting nozzle for your torch model and fuel gas, because fit and size vary between manufacturers and between acetylene and propane setups.

Bigger nozzle orifices cut thicker steel. If you regularly cut across a range of thicknesses, keep several sizes in the drawer.

Clean tips gently with proper tip cleaners, not a drill bit, which enlarges the bore and wrecks the flame.

Regulators, hoses and flashback protection

Every cylinder needs a gas regulator to bring the pressure down to something usable. Look at the flowmeters if you weld with shielding gas. Use gas hoses rated for the fuel gas and swap them when they crack.

Fit arrestors. Flashback arrestors stop a flame travelling back up the hose into the cylinder, and that's not a scenario you want to test. Add the right gas fittings, such as adapters, couplers and hose clips, and check every joint for leaks before you light up. A brush of soapy water does it, and if it bubbles, you have a leak.

Gas trolleys: moving and securing cylinders

A full oxygen or acetylene cylinder is heavy and can fall over. A gas trolley holds both upright, chained in place, and rolls to where you need them. Wheels also mean you stop dragging cylinders by the neck, which damages valves.

When choosing one, check the cylinder sizes it takes, the wheel type for your floor or yard, and whether it has a tray for torch and hoses. Uneven yard surfaces suit larger, pneumatic wheels. Concrete workshop floors don't care.

Always secure cylinders, in use or in storage. A falling cylinder can snap a valve, and that turns into a serious hazard fast.

Gas welding and brazing rods

Gas welding isn't as common as it once was, but brazing is still very much alive, particularly for copper, brass, cast iron repairs and thin steel. The right filler lets you join metal at lower temperature than fusion welding, which cuts distortion.

Protect yourself

Wear safety eyewear or gas welding goggles, welding gloves and flame-resistant clothing. Oil and grease near oxygen is a genuine fire hazard, so keep hands, gloves and fittings clean.
